Hoffmaster State Park Camping Guide +Map

Hoffmaster State Park, also known as P.J. Hoffmaster State Park, is one of the best Michigan campgrounds. Michigan takes pride in beautiful and well-kept parks, and Hoffmaster is among the best.

PJ Hoffmaster State Park has camping, hiking trails, and sand dunes perfect for a family looking to spend time outdoors.

Cost of Camping —

The cost to camp at PJ Hoffmaster State Park varies depending on the time of year and site location. During peak summer and fall seasons, campsites range from $38-$42 a night.

RV Camping —

Campsite sizes can range from tent-only or allow up to a 50’ RV/trailer. The driveway size does not affect the cost though. Most campsites also come with both a 30-amp and 50-amp electrical box.

The campground loops are on the north side of the park and the main visitor center (Gillette Visitor Center) is on the south side of the park.

Trails are scattered throughout, and you can connect loops by walking along the beach.

One of the main draws of Hoffmaster State Park is the campground. The campground is split into 2 loops totaling 293 sites.

Best Campsites at Hoffmaster State Park

I recommend camping in the loop of sites 1-132 as they are closer to the beach and hiking trails.

If you want to minimize the number of steps to the beach, sites 25-60 in loop C are less than a quarter-mile to Lake Michigan.

I recommend making a reservation online at least 2 weeks in advance.

Campsite Amenities —

All but 4 campsites have electrical hookups, and most even have 50 amp service.

None of the sites have water or sewer hookups, but they have a dump station with drinking water near the entrance of the park.

Campground Amenities —

Each loop has very nice clean bathrooms and individual shower stalls.

There are unthreaded potable water spigots scattered throughout the camping area if you want to fill up some water jugs.

While the campground at Hoffmaster State Park is beautiful, it gets crowded on the weekends during the summer.

The trees scattered through the campground help reduce noise and keep some privacy, but the sites are lined up without any space in between.

As with most campgrounds, there was a mass exodus on Sunday morning leaving us with some peace and quiet during the week.

Best Time to Visit - PJ Hoffmaster

June through September are the best months to visit Hoffmaster State Park, especially if you are camping.

May and October are great fringe months to avoid crowds, but you may want to get a hotel or VRBO because night temperatures drop into the 40s.

If you are visiting Hoffmaster to enjoy some beach time, late summer is best because Lake Michigan is cold early in the summer.

My favorite month to visit Hoffmaster State Park is September. The days are still warm, and the nights are in the 50s (perfect for camping). The leaves usually start to change and fall in mid-late September, turning the trails into a wonderland of colors.

Check out the Michigan fall colors report when planning your trip if you are interested in seeing the leaves change.
