If you need some new ideas on what to wear hiking, I’ve gathered cute hiking outfits for any season so you are as comfortable and stylish as possible!

While my first goal is comfort, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t also enjoy looking good for the photos once we bag a peak! At least as good as one can look after a sweaty hike.

What to Wear Hiking

A common hiking outfit for women includes: a sports bra, synthetic underwear, shorts or pants, a sweat-wicking shirt that covers your chest from the sun, and a packable jacket.

Helpful tips on what to wear hiking:

  • Layering is Essential: I’m always colder at the start of the hike so wearing layers is key to being comfortable throughout the hike

  • Avoid Cotton and Denim: both hold onto water, so any sweat will linger making you cold and smelly.

  • Bring a Jacket: Unless you are certain no rain or wind are forecasted, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared for sudden weather changes.

  • Shoes with a Solid Grip: your gym shoes should be fine on easy trails, but if it rains or you’re hiking 3+ miles you’re going to want hiking shoes with a durable, solid grip.

  • Wear a Backpack: It doesn't have to be fancy, just one that is light and comfortable where you can store your clothing layers, water, snacks, and hiking accessories.

Hiking Outfits

- for Spring -

Spring is the best time of year go to go hiking! The meadows are full of wild flowers and the snow has melted to create raging waterfalls.

You’ll want a lightweight rain jacket like my all-time favorite REI Rainier Jacket. The Gore-Tex makes it lightweight yet extremely windproof and waterproof.

When it comes to pants, I rotate between the ultra-lightweight North Face Aphrodite Pants, and the most comfortable trekking tights.

Hiking Outfits - Summer

In the hot summer months, I recommend getting a nice sweat-wicking athletic top.

My favorite is the lululemon Swiftly shirts since they have the anti-stink technology that inhibits the growth of odor-causing bacteria and it actually works!

Tips - Hiking in Summer

In summer, it’s really helpful to have a wide brim hat to cover more skin since you’re probably hiking in short sleeves.

I always carry the best DEET-free mosquito repellent and my favorite lightweight, sweat-proof sunscreen.

- Winter -

If you’re hiking in winter, layering is once again very important so you’re warm enough at the start but can shed as you start to climb.

A packable down jacket that has 700-800 fill is ideal for winter hiking since it will be insulated enough to keep you warm throughout your hike and easily packs down if needed.

When it comes to winter hiking pants, I like to hike in a thicker legging that is lined with fleece if temperatures are above freezing.

If it is really cold and we are snowshoeing, I’m a big fan of these waterproof fleece lined hiking pants.

You’ll want to make sure you have a beanie and hiking gloves for colder days. Try to avoid cotton gloves as they’ll only get sweaty and you’ll end up colder.

Having a GPS sport-watch is a great addition if you’re going to start hiking or even walking more often.

I love the Garmin Venu 3 since it looks more like a standard watch, lasts for a week, and has serious fitness tracking technology.

A back pack is an absolute must for hiking! I wear the Osprey Tempest the most because it has a built-in hydration bladder, countless pockets right where you need them, and a dedicated attachment spot for trekking poles.

I cannot recommend these trekking poles enough! They will save your knees and back more than you can imagine, especially on those steep or rocky mountains.
